Giuseppe Morabito

Born in Rome on May 29th, 1953, Giuseppe Morabito graduated in Political Sciences from “La Sapienza” University – Rome, in 1977, with a thesis in political philosophy on “The Interpretations of Stalinism”.

During his academic studies, he developed a growing interest in international relations, an interest that prompted him to undertake the diplomatic career.

After entering the diplomatic service in 1981, he served, as a Secretary of Legation, at the Directorate General for Political Affairs, dealing with East-West relations.

His first assignment abroad was in Baghdad in the years 1983-1987, where he was in charge of economic and trade issues.

From 1987 to 1991 he was posted at the Italian Embassy in Paris. As First Secretary and then Commercial Counselor, he was responsible for economic and commercial affairs.

In 1992 he returned to Rome, at the Directorate General for Political Affairs.

From 1996, he served at the Italian Permanent Representation at the European Union in Brussels, where he was responsible for the cohesion and competition policies.

After serving as Consul General in Miami (2000-2003), he was appointed Head of the Central Technical Unit of the Development Cooperation, the MFA body in charge of assessing technical feasibility of development cooperation projects.

Appointed Minister Plenipotentiary in 2004, he became Deputy Director General of the Development Cooperation in 2006.

In October 2008, he was appointed Director General for Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2008, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic – rank of Commendatore.

On October 16th, 2010, he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Lebanon.

In December 2011, he received the international award “Bonifacio VIII”.

Giuseppe Morabito is married to Sheba and has two daughters, Allegra (1997) and Arabella (1998).
